A Food Lover's Guide to Cretan Cuisine

From dakos to lamb with stamnagathi — explore the flavors of Crete with our guide to the island's most beloved dishes and where to find them.

Cretan cuisine is considered one of the healthiest in the world — and it’s also one of the most delicious. Rooted in the Mediterranean diet, Cretan food celebrates fresh, local ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, wild herbs, seasonal vegetables, and slow-cooked meats.

Must-Try Dishes

Dakos

The quintessential Cretan salad: a barley rusk soaked in olive oil, topped with crushed tomatoes, mizithra cheese, oregano, and capers. Simple, fresh, and unforgettable.

Kalitsounia

Small pastries filled with either sweet mizithra cheese (dessert version) or wild greens like stamnagathi. You’ll find them in every bakery and village celebration.

Lamb with Stamnagathi

Slow-roasted lamb served with stamnagathi — a bitter wild green unique to Crete, dressed with olive oil and lemon. It’s a dish that captures the essence of the island.

Boureki

A layered bake of courgettes, potatoes, and soft cheese from Chania. Comfort food at its best, especially when made by a Cretan grandmother.

Gamopilafo

The “wedding rice” — a creamy, rich pilaf cooked in meat stock, traditionally served at celebrations. Look for it in tavernas that specialize in Cretan cuisine.

  • Avli, Rethymno — Fine dining with ingredients from their own farm
